A new benchmark

I used to think that comfortably playing ‘Cavatina’ at full speed was the ultimate benchmark for progress in classical guitar. And in many respects it is, given the technical challenges it presents. But then I happened upon a piece entitled ‘Recuerdos de La Alhambra’. A new Everest had been discovered.

Composed by a dude called Francisco Tarrega, ‘Recuerdos’ is something of an iconic classical guitar ditty. And boy does it require speed. I am presently halfway through learning and memorising it yet I have yet to progress beyond playing it at quarter speed. The summit seems a long way away.

However I have my climbing boots on and all going well I’ll get there. Someday.
