Town planning

Although it is probably more by accident than design that the seaside, western, town of Enniscrone is a very ‘vision impaired‘friendly’ spot, it is a very welcome discovery none the less.

I was first introduced to Enniscrone many moons ago by The Kitchen Sink Dude. The initial attraction was the excellent golf links there, however as time has gone on and my desire to wrap a piece of steel around the back of my head with a view to connecting with a small spherical object on the ground at a very precise angle has faded, I still return to this sliver of Sligo. The beach, the seaweed bath house, the fresh, Atlantic sea air, the excellent and friendly Waterfront guest house, not forgetting the fine local hostelries, it’s a good spot. Three and a quarter hours by train from Dublin to Ballina, followed by a twenty minute taxi ride and I’m there. On a recent visit I happened upon an old golfing friend who moved to Ballina a year ago and who kindly met me off the train last Tuesday and brought me into Enniscrone tor my latest trip. A few pints, a bit of nosh and an in depth analysis of the recent Open Championship soon followed. There are very few steps and a minimum of street furniture to negotiate around the town which cuts down on the stress levels for this particular Vision Impaired Guinness Gulping Classical Guitarist. Would that all towns followed suit.

All of which means a return to Sligo is very much on the cards.
