Best team won

So it seems I know as much about football as I do about politics and women. An early goal for England was not enough in the Euros final last night as Italy came back and did the biz on penalties.

Italy were the best team on the night, the best team over the course of the tournament and so were deserving winners. The English team and their very admirable manager Gareth Southgate can hold their heads very high. Losing a game does not always equate to failure.

Disappointingly much of the comment today has had to focus on the racist abuse directed towards the three English players who missed penalties. It also seems there was trouble inside and outside the stadium before, during and after the game. Human beings are a strange species.

It’s just not on.

  2. The penalty kick in football (soccer) was devised by an Irishman Willam McCrum from Armagh (also a cricket, rugby, and chess player), after reluctance from the English and Scottish FA, who wouldn’t accept a gentleman would unsportingly intentionally break the rules and foul an opponent.

  3. The rules for penalties were changed, to state that the goalie had to stay on the line (which has got more focus from referees recently), due to Irish goalkeeper (and Cardiff City), Tom Farquharson from Botanic Ave. Drumcondra, who would run straight for the penalty spot after the whistle blew, since most takers took a long run-up, he would get near the spot saving or causing them to miss however he often just collided with the taker.
