Sporting Icons; Kenny Dalglish

Football is back.

On the radio airwaves, the tv screens and in the collective consciousness.

Today is the day that The Boys From Anfield, otherwise known as Liverpool Football Club, resume the quest for their first league title in 30 years. When they last won the championship in 1990 they were managed by one Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish.

Kenny Dalglish grew up in Glasgow, Scotland and his first footballing love was Glasgow Rangers.

Ironically it was with Glasgow Celtic, bitter rivals of Rangers, that Dalglish first signed a professional contract, making his first team debut the following year on 25 September 1968, aged 17.

Dalglish remained with Celtic until 1977, when he transferred to Liverpool.

Signed as a replacement for the great Kevin Keegan, Dalglish became one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Liverpool player of all time.

Although not the fastest striker in terms of physical speed, Dalglish’s genius was in his speed of thought.

He progressed to become player/manager of Liverpool in 1985 and scored one of his best and most memorable goals in the 1-0 win over Chelsea, a victory that secured the league title in 1986.

This was also the year that Liverpool won the league and FA Cup double for the first time in their history.

On 15 April 1989 Liverpool played an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, in Hillsborough, Sheffield.

96 Liverpool fans who went to that game never returned home.

The Hillsborough Disaster had a huge impact on Dalglish. On 22 February 1991 he announced his resignation as Liverpool Manager to a shocked footballing world.

He re-emerged 9 months later as manager of Blackburn Rovers, winning the league title in 1995, ironically at Anfield, his spiritual home.

In January 2011 Dalglish once again became manager of Liverpool, although his second time at the helm proved less successful than his first.

Dalglish made a record 102 international appearances for Scotland and scored a record equalling 30 goals.

He was knighted in 2018 and one of the Anfield stands has been named in his honour.

Kenny Dalglish is a Liverpool Great.
