Pearse Street

Time to return to the southside.

Strolling past the very impressive Bord Gais Energy Theatre and along through the Grand Canal Docklands development, I swing right and find myself on Pearse Street.

As Dorset Street is the gateway to the north city centre so too is Pearse Street the gateway to the south centre.

Named after the Pearse brothers, Padraig and Willie, who were born there, and running from Grand Canal Basin at its eastern end to College Street at the west, Pearse Street only really comes to life at the junction of Westland Row and Lombard Street.

It is here that I am reminded of the General Register Office on Lombard Street, the place to go in order to research family history and also to acquire birth, death and marriage certificates.

Across the way is the Trinity College Science Gallery, site of many an interesting exhibition.

Coming up on the overhead railway bridge, I am reminded of the old Academy Cinema, which closed in 1981 and is now a refurbished office building.

Moving up to the junction of Shaw Stret I am facing O’Neills pub, a good spot for a pint and well known for its decorative hanging flower baskets.

Crossing over Tara Street I am soon outside Pearse Street Garda Station and at the end of my tour for the day.

At this point in proceedings I would just like to point out that My Good Self has never in his entire life ever darkened the door of Pearse Street Garda Station.

My Good Self is nothing if not a decent, upstanding citizen of the fair city of Dublin.

Well at least most of the time anyway.
