Sunday Miscellany

Sunday Miscellany’ is a long running programme on RTE Radio 1.

It’s a mixed bag of stories written by listeners.

Yesterday morning one in particular caught my ear as it referenced things close to where I grew up.

Talk of Premier Dairies and the River Tolka meant the writer/reader grew up close to my own family home.

It was a heart warming and poignant Easter story linked in to the current crisis.

The story spoke of childhood memories, Smarties Easter Eggs and of visits to the Dublin mountains to eat those eggs.

The reader spoke of her mother who has dementia and now lives in a nursing home.

Of course mother and daughter will not be together this Easter but this does not stop them singing together over the phone the Vera Lynn classic track ‘We’ll meet again’.

Mother had a Smarties Easter Egg to greet her at the end of her bed yesterday morning.

Daughter is saving her Smarties Easter Egg for the time when she can once again bring her Mother for an outing to the Dublin mountains , a place where her Mothers memory temporarily returns.

Link below, it’s well worth a listen, as are the other stories in the programme.

  1. Why don’t you try sending in a couple of stories of your own?

    2. Just had a look at criteria, 700 to 800 words. I think I’ll go with the ‘Blind Shepherd’ one. Any thoughts?

Why don’t you submit something as suggested? you really should.
Have you thought of the short story competition being run by RTE?

    1. Currently working on something for Miscellany around the homeless gelato gig, I need to stretch it out a bit! I’ll have a look at the short story criteria. Thanks for suggestion!!
