It turned out to be a short break.
I’m back.
Addictions must be fed.
Yesterday morning saw My Good Self arise from the hay around six bells.
As ever, the magic boiler was the first port of call, closely followed by the scribbling pad and then, of course, the guitar.
The radio had already been on the go for over an hour.
Guitar practice usually sees the emergence of something which is both friend and foe.
The metronome.
A metronome is a device which is essential for musical learning.
It sends out ‘ticking’ noises at various speeds (beats per minute or ‘bpm’).
In order to play a piece of music with some degree of competence, notes must be played precisely on the clicks, and sometimes in between them for notes that are known as ‘off beats’.
My initial encounters with the metronome were often frustrating, however as time has passed and the little grey cells between my ears became more accustomed to this new tool of learning, things improved.
I can happily say that we are now the best of buddies.
Most of the time.
On occasion she can still be a very demanding lady.
As ladies are sometimes rumoured to be.
And so, as the morning progressed and light slowly seeped in through the windows of My Official Residence, it soon became time to see what the outside world looked like again.
For the most part the citizens of the outside world are quite a civilised lot.
A pleasant but windy stroll in the Park was followed by a most pleasing soup, sandwich and a few drops of the black stuff in The Great Institution of Chatham Street.
The Budapest Boy and The Cycling Correspondent were on duty. Tomato and basil was the soup of the day.
It was all good.
The journey home was lengthened by a detour to the Irish Film Institute to catch ‘The Lighthouse’.
My Good Self emerged from the cinema a few hours later firm in the opinion that I will not be pursuing a career in lighthouse keeping anytime soon.
The remainder of my day was a mix of music, radio and Netflix.
I heard the call from the day around 12 bells and before long I was five sheets to the wind.
It had been a good day.
