And so the inevitable came to pass and Donald Trump was acquitted by the US Senate and his impeachment trial came to an end.
The only shining light in the whole murky process was the decision by the Republican Utah Senator, Mitt Romney, to cross party lines and vote with his conscience to convict Trump.
His was a lone voice of rebellion and so The Lowest Common Denominator Dude is once again free to carry on dividing America and the world.
The only real point of political interest here is Romney’s fate.
Will his decision benefit him or lead to his downfall?
If Trump has anything to do with it, the latter will be the case. He has wasted no time at all attacking Romney.
In order to find out the answer to this question, we will all need to be patient as Romney is not up for re-election until 2024.
Whatever way the cookie crumbles for the Utah Senator, his decision was a ray of brightness in a period of darkness for the US.
Somewhere down the line the American public and politicians will come to their senses and start to pull together as opposed to tearing each other apart.
The only reassuring thing about the current state of affairs is that it will inevitably change for the better sometime. And when it does, there will be a stronger, more determined approach not to go back.
Romney provided a silver lining to a particularly dark cloud.
As the great Leonard Cohen once sang; ‘there is a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’.
