1917

The King of Staines had spoken.

He had informed My Good Self that the movie ‘1917’ was a classic.

A ‘must see’.

It is a rare thing indeed to hear such a profound pronouncement coming from the great man himself.

Almost as rare as a defeat for The Boys From Anfield (Liverpool).

When the King speaks in such definitive tones, My Good Self listens closely.

And so it came to pass that I strolled along yesterday to the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar to see what all the fuss was about.

Set over the course of one day during the First World War in April 1917, the movie tells the story of two young soldiers who are given a dangerous mission to cross enemy lines on foot so as to pass on vital orders to an allied commander not to proceed with a planned attack.

The First World War was bizarrely known in some quarters as the ‘Great war’ or as the ‘war to end all wars’.

Didn’t quite work out that way.

Trench warfare in all its ugliness is given a strong airing in the movie. Armed with an audio description headset I was comfortably able to follow all events. Music is used sparingly in the earlier parts of the film however it plays a strong and moving role as the emotional end approaches.

‘1917’ won several BAFTA’s and no doubt will win many Oscars.

It is a great movie, one that asks its audience to look back, remember and be thankful for the Europe that we now live in.

Watching ‘1917’, My Good Self could not help thinking of Brexit and wondering why?
