Red and Blue

Red is the colour of fire and blood. It is associated with passion and love.

Blue is the colour of the sky and the sea. It is associated with stability and depth.

This coming Sunday, November 10, at 16.30 Greenwich Mean Time, blue meets red. Passion and love go head to head with depth and stability.

It’s Liverpool versus Manchester City.

Situated in the Northwest of England, Liverpool and Manchester sit 50 kilometers apart.

The two cities have much in common. Both have strong industrial traditions. Both have given the world great and lasting music. The Beatles emerged from Liverpool, Oasis from Manchester.

And there is the football.

There is a mixture of footballing triumph and tragedy in both cities.

On 6 February 1958 British European Airways Flight 609 crashed. 23 of the 44 passengers died. On board the plane was the great ‘Busby Babes’ Manchester United team. Eight of the United team died.

On 15 April 1989 Liverpool met Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi final at the neutral ground of Hillsborough, Sheffield. Many Liverpool fans travelled to that game. 96 never returned home.

The two cities have also dominated in the footballing trophy stakes. Red has been the dominant team colour in both cases. Liverpool and Manchester United are the two most successful teams in English football history. Their counterparts in blue, Everton and Manchester City have had spells of success, but lag behind in terms of overall achievement.

Manchester City are currently having one of the best spells of achievement in their history. Managed by the great Spaniard Pep Guardiola, they are the defending league champions.

Liverpool are the pretenders to the throne. They were a close second to City last time around. They currently top the table, six points ahead of City and are managed by the charismatic German Jurgen Klopp.

So it’s Liverpool and City. Red and Blue. Passion and love takes on depth and stability.

My Good Self will take passion and love any which way he can find it.

I am covered in red from head to toe.

In Jurgen I trust.
